Population Density Estimation Of Mangrove Horseshoe Crabs (Carcinoscorpius Rotundicauda) In The Northern Coast Of Rangsang Island, Riau
Mangrove horseshoe crab (Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda) is a species that is
often netted by fishermen, but today its status has been protected. Therefore, the
research was aimed to estimate the density and sex ratio of mangrove horseshoe
crab population in the north coast of Rangsang Island. In addition, it is
necessary to know the perception of the local community towards mangrove
horseshoe crab. Sampling was conducted from March to April 2021 at five
observation stations. At each station a 100x1m net is installed in each selected
plot. The mangrove horseshoe crab that stuck in the net were taken at low tide
during the day. The crabs are collected in containers were being sexing, counted,
and recorded in number on worksheets, and also documented. Mangrove
horseshoe crabs that have been recorded, painted yellow on the shell, and next
mangrove horse shoe crab released back into their habitat. Estimated overall
density on the north coast of Rangsang Island is 0.026/m2. The sex ratio is
1.67:1. Public perception of the biology and conservation of mangrove horseshoe
crab is presented in detailed way and discussed how such perceptions are
thought to affect mangrove horseshoe crab populations.
