This study aims to: (1) to find out how the implementation of transformational
leadership characteristics of school principals during the pandemic in the Al Azhar
Islamic Boarding School Pekanbaru Foundation, (2) to find out how school
principals improve the quality of schools within the Al Azhar Islamic Boarding School
Pekanbaru Foundation. This type of research is qualitative with a case study
approach. Data collection techniques using document review, observation and
interviews. The data sources used are primary data and secondary data, while the
primary data sources in this study are school principals and teachers, while
secondary data is supporting data for the premiere data obtained by researchers from
books, archives, documents, observation, and supporting facilities. The results of the
research on the Implementation of Principal Transformational Leadership during the
pandemic to improve school quality (Case Study at Al Azhar Islamic Boarding School
Pekanbaru Riau) the principal of YPI AL Azhar Pekanbaru applied 4 dimensions,
namely: (1) idealized influence, namely the ability to make decisions, foster ,
self-confidence of teachers and staff. (2) Inspirational motivation, namely providing
motivation to teachers and staff, generating teacher enthusiasm and optimism. (3)
Intellectual stimulation, namely providing innovative new ideas, providing solutions
to problems faced. (4) Individualized Consideration, namely listening to complaints
faced by teachers and staff, helping to provide the facilities needed by teachers in
supporting work performance needs.
In improving the quality of schools, the principal of YPI Islam AL Azhar made a
breakthrough, namely improving teacher performance, improving excellent service,
excellent and extracurricular programs, improving teacher professionalism. The
conclusion that can be drawn in this study is that in implementing
transformational leadership of school principals during the covid 19 pandemic,
school principals have been very good at implementing transformational leadership
during this pandemic, then school principals have tried well in improving school
quality during the pandemic.
