ABSTRACT
Fly ash is an innovation to replace cement which has pozzolanic properties like
cement. Fly ash can increase the strength of lightweight bricks and able to
survived in high temperatures because it has a melting point of 1300 oC. The
increase in temperature that occurs in lightweight bricks due to sunlight or fire
disasters can affect the mechanical and thermal properties of lightweight bricks.
Mechanical properties include changes in compressive strength, while thermal
properties include temperature distribution and heat absorption in lightweight
bricks. This study aims to analyze the changes in the compressive strength and
thermal properties of lightweight bricks with the addition of fly ash due to
exposure to high temperatures. This study used a cube-shaped sample with a side
length of 10 cm. The test object was exposed to high temperature using an oven
and then tested for compressive strength using a compression load cell. Analysis
of the temperature distribution using the finite element method with the LUSAS
V.19 application. Variation of exposure temperature starts from 50 oC to 300 oC
and time variation from 10 minutes to 40 minutes in increments of 10 minutes.
Each variation has 3 samples with a total of 60 samples. The naming of the
samples starts from T50W10-1 to T300W40-3 with the meaning that the first letter
describes the temperature variation sequentially, the first number is the time
variation, and the last number is the sample number. All tests were carried out
after the lightweight brick was 28 days old. The results of the highest average
compressive strength test were sample A2 with 0.80 MPa and the lowest average
compressive strength was sample E4 at 0.33 MPa. The decrease in the
compressive strength of sample A2 was 50.92% and sample E4 was 79.84% from
the lightweight brick before being exposed. The analysis uses LUSAS V.19 with
the output of a temperature distribution graph that serves to calculate the value of
heat absorption in lightweight brick. The highest heat absorption value occurred
in sample A1-1 of 99.96% and the smallest in sample E4-3 of 92.08%. Based on
the results of the study, it can be concluded that lightweight brick with added fly
ash exposed to a temperature of 50 oC to 150 oC did not experience a significant
decrease in compressive strength over time. Meanwhile, at a temperature of 250
oC to 300 oC, the compressive strength decreased considerably and the ability of
lightweight brick to absorb heat decreased with increasing time and increasing
exposure temperature.
