Nasal polyps are soft fluid-filled masses that can grow on the nasal mucosa
as a manifestation of a chronic inflamation in the nasal mucosa or paranasal
sinuses. Each type of nasal polyp has a different inflammatory profile that varies in
the relative proportion of blood types and in the histopathological appearance.
Based on the general histological findings, nasal polyps were divided into
eosinophil-dominant inflammation and neutrophil-dominant inflammation.
This study was conducted to determine the profile of eosinophils and
neutrophils in nasal polyps patients at the ENT polyclinic Arifin Achmad Hospital.
This study is a retrospective descriptive study using medical record data from nasal
polyps patients whose histopathological preparations of polyp tissue were taken at
the Anatomical Pathology Installation of Arifin Achmad Hospital Riau Province
from 2018-2021. During this period, 22 samples were found that met the inclusion
and exclusion criteria.
The results of this study showed that nasal polyps most often occur in the
≤20 year age group (54.5%). The sex of most patients with nasal polyps was male
(59.1%). The highest level of eosinophils in the blood of patients with nasal polyps
was found in the low category (40.9%). The highest levels of blood neutrophils in
patients with nasal polyps were in the normal category (72.7%). All patients with
nasal polyps had low tissue eosinophil levels (100%). All patients with nasal polyps
have low tissue neutrophil levels (100%).
