A Study Of The First Year Students' Vocabulary Mastery At The English Study Program, Teachers' Training And Education Faculty, Universitas Riau

The objective of this research was to find out the students' knowledge and problem in vocabulary mastery. This research used a quantitative method. The sample for this research consists of 38 students of first-year students. The researcher used two instruments which were a test and a questionnaire. The vocabulary test results found that the students' vocabulary knowledge got a mean score of 59.5 and was in the enough category. Then, the questionnaire results showed that students still feel confused about the correct use of suffixes and prefixes in a word, often use wrong suffixes and prefixes in a word, feel difficult to master vocabulary in terms of antonyms and synonyms. And students agree that the lack of motivation is one of the causes of problems in mastering vocabulary.
