Oil palm fronds have a high cellulose content, so they can be used as raw material for the manufacture of activated carbon because it is very effective at adsorption of waste. Unlicensed gold miners (PETI) in Kuantan Singingi Regency have polluted the water of the Kuantan River and caused a decrease in water quality. The purpose of the study was to test the ability of activated carbon to adsorb mercury ions in the water of the Batang Kuantan River. Oil palm fronds were carbonized using a furnace at a temperature of 500oC for 1 hour and activated using NaOH in a ratio of 1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 (w/w). Carbon from oil palm fronds activated by NaOH 1:4 showed the best characterization results with moisture content of 1.49%, ash content of 1.79%, adsorption capacity to iodine 891.928 mg/g and adsorption capacity to methylene blue 18.392 mg/g. Activated carbon from palm fronds was contacted with 30 mg/L HgCl2 solution with variations in contact time of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes. The adsorption efficiency of each contact time was 84.93% (10 minutes), 92.69% (20 minutes), 93.47% (30 minutes), 95.14% (40 minutes), 94.71% (50 minutes) and 93.65% (60 minutes) with adsorption capacity of mercury ion was 5.0579 mg/g, 5.5369 mg/g, 5.5747 mg/g, 5.6767 mg/g, 5.6514 mg/g and 5.5881 mg/g. The concentration of mercury ions in Batang Kuantan River in the upstream, middle and downstream areas were 0.635 μg/L, 1.410 μg/L and 1.937 μg/L, respectively. NaOH 1:4 activated oil palm frond charcoal was contacted with river water for 40 minutes with the adsorption efficiency of 72.76%, 72.81% and 72.94%, respectively. The concentration of mercury ion in the water of Batang Kuantan River in the upstream, middle and downstream parts is 0.173 μg/L, 0.382 μg/L and 0.527 μg/L, respectively. The measured mercury concentration in the Batang Kuantan River water in Teberau Panjang has not passed the quality standard stipulated by Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Environmental Protection and Management. Based on the data obtained, the activated charcoal from the palm fronds is able to adsorb mercury ions in Batang Kuantan River
