Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia or chronic and
variable increases in blood sugar levels. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus itself has several complications that can
affect the patient's quality of life, one of which occurs in the eye causing the surface of the patient's eye to
become dry. This situation is called dry eye syndrome (DES), which has an impact on visual function, where
chronic DES symptoms can cause a decrease in the ability to carry out daily activities, thereby affecting
the quality of life. The purpose of this study was to determine the quality of life of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
patients who were diagnosed with Dry Eye Syndrome at Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province. The
research design was cross-sectional with an observational analytic descriptive nature. This study used the
OSDI questionnaire as a subjective instrument for diagnosing the severity of DES, and the DEQS
questionnaire for assessing the quality of life in DES patients. The results of this study showed that the
majority of respondents had a severe category of DES (57.5%) and a poor quality of life (80%).
