ABSTRACT
The grounding system is a part of the protection applied to the electric power system, which aims to secure the electric power system and humans from fault currents by channeling them to the ground. An ideal grounding system has a small grounding resistance value. However, in reality it is not easy to obtain a small grounding resistance value, because it is influenced by the nature and characteristics of the soil it self. In this research, a method has been carried out to reduce the value of grounding resistance by utilizing activated charcoal from empty palm oil fruit bunches (EFB) which is activated by NaCl as Soil Treatment. The test was carried out on a type of clay using a rod electrode. The results obtained with variations of charcoal and soil 1; 1, 2; 1, and full charcoal in the three grounding holes are that after adding charcoal to the first grounding hole, the grounding resistance value decreased to 78.94 Ω from the previous 184.84 Ω. The second hole, the grounding resistance value decreased to 51.4 Ω from the previous 131.78 Ω. The third hole, the value of ground resistance decreased to 132.92 Ω from the previous 383 Ω.
