Yellowfin tuna is a large pelagic fish that commonly caught the West
Sumatra sea. It is predicted that the potency of this fish in the West Sumatra sea
was 300,000 tons per year. Unfortunately, only 25% of the existing potential is
exploited due to fishing captured methods applied in that area. Most of fishermen
using traditional methods to determine the fishing areas, especially natural signs
such as ripples on the water surface and the presence of birds congregating above
the water surface. The application of remote sensing technology using Aqua
MODIS satellite imagery is one of the more effective methods used in determining
the fishing area of yellowfin tuna as this remote sensing technology analyzes
objects without having to measure them directly.
The existence of fish can be determined by measuring the concentration of
chlorophyll-a as an indicator of food sources in the waters. While measuring
sea surface temperature might be used as an indicator of yellowfin tuna
environment. then determining the alleged fishing area for yellowfin tuna using
the overlay technique by shading the areas resulting from chlorophyll-a analysis
with criteria >0.1 mg/m3, then combined with the results of analysis of sea surface
temperature with criteria of 29oC-30oC. This research was conducted from 05
August to 29 September 2022 using Aqua MODIS satellite imagery data.
Furthermore, sampling is carried out to measure the accuracy of the image data
used. Samples were taken at 5 research station points.
Results shown that the average of chlorophyll-a concentration was 2.01
mg/m3. The highest concentration occurred in the period of 13-20 August 2022
(3.17 mg/m3) and the lowest occurred in the period of 06-13 September 2022 (0.85
mg/m3). During the research, the sea surface temperature was slightly fluctuated,
29.5oC – 30.8oC (average 30.5oC). The accuracy of the fishing area for yellowfin
tuna is calculated by comparing the shaded area of the suspected fishing area for
yellowfin tuna with the fishing point sourced from the logbook data for tuna
fishing coordinates. The results obtained are the accuracy of the estimated fishing
area for yellowfin tuna has an average of 28.7%, where the highest accuracy
value occurs in the period 29 August to 05 September 2022 with an accuracy rate
of 69.8% and the lowest occurs in the period from 13 to 20 August 2022 with an
accuracy rate of 3.9%.
