RELATION BETWEEN PRIMERY DYSMENORRHEA WITH VOLUME AND CYCLES OF MENSTRUATION IN MEDICAL STUDENT UNIVERSITY OF RIAU

Background: Primary dysmenorrhea was a condition of abdominal pain and cramps during menstruation that was not based on a pathological condition. Primary dysmenorrhea occurs due to increased prostaglandin (PG) F2-alpha which was a cyclooxygenase (COX-2) which resulted hypertonus and vasoconstriction in the myometrium resulting in ischemia and pain in the lower abdomen.
Objectives: This study aims to determined the relation between primary dysmenorrhea with volume and cycles of menstruation in undergraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Riau.
Methods: This research was analytic in nature with a cross-sectional research design with a total sampling method. The population of this study were undergraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Riau, totaling 410 people.
Results: The results of this study obtained 143 research respondents who experienced primary dysmenorrhea. The results of the frequency distribution of the characteristics of the research respondents were mostly at the age of 20 years (37.1%), normal menarche (86.7%), no family history (98.6%), normal BMI (48.9%) and circumference normal abdominal (72.7%). There is a significant relation between menstrual volume and primary dysmenorrhea (p=0.029) and there is no significant relation between menstrual cycles and primary dysmenorrhea (p=0.087).
