Background : Acute urinary retention is a medical emergency characterized by the sudden inability to urinate within a few hours accompanied by pain. Acute urinary retention can occur due to many etiologies, which are grouped into: obstructive, inflammatory, excessively distended, and trauma. Treatment for acute urinary retention varies, including urethral catheterization, suprapubic puncture, open cystosomy, and percutaneous cystostomy.
Objective : Knowing the description of the diagnosis and management of acute urinary retention at RSUD Arifin Achmad Riau Province for the 2017-2021 period.
Method : Retrospective study was conduced at Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province from January 2023 to February 2023. Patient data was taken through medical records.
Result : Of the 186 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, it was found that the age group diagnosed with acute urinary retention was the most from the 56-65 years group of 45 people (24.2%). There were 101 males (54.3%) and 85 females (45.7%). The most common etiology of patients with acute urinary retention was obstructive etiology in 94 people (50.5%). The most common management of patients with acute urinary retention was urethral catheterization in 161 people (86.6%). Most complications in patients with acute urinary retention were urethral injuries in 8 people (47.1%).
