Genetic literacy is sufficient knowledge for an individual to be involved and actively participate in the field of genetics. Genetic literacy is important for medical doctors because of the rapid development of genetic technology in the health sector, for example genetic screening. However, genetics education for clinical clerkship students is still very minimal. The purpose of this study is to describe the genetic literacy of medical students on clinical clerkships in the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau. The research design was an observational descriptive study which was carried out in October 2022 - January 2023 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Riau. There were 187 students undergoing clinical clerkship at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau participated as subjects. This study used the Indonesian version of UNC-GKS questionnaire which was distributed online. The median score of genetic literacy among the medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Riau, was 63,15 (min-max = 42-95) with 56,1% of the respondents were classified as having moderate knowledge. Based on the genetic concepts tested, majority respondents had good literacy on basic genetics (54,0%), poor literacy on the relationship between genes and health (65,8%), and moderate literacy on the gene inheritance within family (49.2%). This research can be taken into consideration for related institutions in including genetics material into the curriculum of clinical clerkship program.
