THE OVERVIEW OF GENETIC LITERACY IN GENERAL PRACTITIONERS GRADUATED FROM MEDICAL FACULTY OF UNIVERSITAS RIAU

The ability to understand and use a range of genetic information is known as genetic literacy. Genetic literacy is fundamental in the analysis and decision-making related to genetic testing. General practitioners have an important role in providing advice and treatment steps based on a person's genetic test results, a lack of genetic literacy will limit it. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of genetic literacy in general practitioners graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau. This study is a descriptive observational study using the Indonesian version of University of North Carolina Genomic Knowledge Scale (UNC-GKS) questionnaire. The research sample was 145 general practitioners graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau. The results showed that the level of genetic literacy in general practitioners alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau, mostly (55.17%) were classified as moderate. The results of the level of genetic literacy of general practitioners alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau based on 3 domains from UNC-GKS regarding basic gene knowledge mostly (48.97%) are good, regarding genes and health mostly (59.31%) are poor and regarding gene inheritance in the family mostly (45.52%) are moderate. The results showed that genetic literacy regarding genes and health needs to be improved by improving the learning system at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau as the first step in receiving genetics-related knowledge.
