GENETIC LITERACY PROFILE AMONG MEDICAL RESIDENTS OF THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE UNIVERSITAS RIAU

Genetic science and technology in the health sector has increased and has a significant impact on society. With increasing access to genetic services, knowledge and understanding of genetics is needed, especially for specialist doctors. The purpose of this study was to describe genetic literacy among medical residents of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau. This research is a descriptive study with data collection using the Indonesian translation of the University of North Carolina Genomic Knowledge Scale (UNC-GKS) questionnaire. The samples of this study were 71 students of medical residents at Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau, from department of Pulmonology, Obstetrics-Gynaecology, Surgery, and Anesthesiology & Intensive Therapy. The results showed that genetic literacy score among medical residents of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau was moderate (34 residents, 47.9%). There are 3 subchapters in the UNC-GKS questionnaire and the results show that the concept of basic gene knowledge of the most respondents is good (37 residents 52.1%), the concept of gene and health relationship of the most respondents is poor (40 residents, 29.6%), and the concept of gene inheritance in the of the most respondents is moderate (29 residents, 40.8%). The conclusion of this study is that genetic literacy among medical residents of Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau is in the moderate category and the knowledge of the concept of gene and health relationships needs to be improved.
