Shivering is a traumatic event experienced by postoperative patients. Shivering were defined as fasciculations of the face, jaw, head or muscle hyperactivity, whereas postoperative shivering/post anesthetic shivering (PAS) was involuntary and oscillatory muscle activity during early recovery after anaesthesia. The purpose of this study was to measure the incidence of postoperative shivering at Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province. The research design used was descriptive categorical using primary data in the form of direct observation and interviews with patients in the recovery room of RSUD Arifin Achmad Riau Province as well as secondary data in the form of medical records and patient anesthesia status. The research sample was taken using a consecutive sampling technique with a sample of 86 people. The results showed that the incidence of shivering experienced by postoperative patients at Arifin Achmad Hospital was 21 respondents (24.4%). The number of incidents of shivering in postoperative patients using general anesthesia was 12 respondents (57.1%) and using regional (spinal) anesthesia was 9 respondents (42.9%). The number of incidents of shivering in postoperative patients with the highest type of surgery was ob-gyn with 5 respondents (23.8%), followed by digestive, urology and orthopedics each with 4 respondents (19.0%), and in otolaryngology, only 1 respondent experienced postoperative shivering (4.8%). The number of incidents of shivering in postoperative patients with the highest duration of surgery was moderate as many as 9 respondents (42.9%), long duration 9 respondents (33.3%), and short duration 5 respondents (23.8%).
