Desain Pengelolaan Ekosistem Sungai Yang Berkelanjutan Di Kota Tembilahan Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir
Background and Objective: The complexity and increased utilization of water resources have affected the water quality of rivers flowing in the Tembilahan City area. Population growth and rapid urban development have led to an increase in the amount of waste entering rivers, causing water pollution. This situation is exacerbated by the low awareness, knowledge, and behaviour of the community in protecting the river environment in Tembilahan City. In addition to having a negative impact on river ecosystems, river water pollution can also affect public health in Tembilahan. The lack of monitoring and research related to river management, as well as the absence of a sustainable river management plan, remain obstacles in determining the management strategy of the rivers that drain Tembilahan City. Therefore, a sustainable river management design study is needed to restore and protect river ecosystems in Tembilahan City in order to create a balanced relationship between utilization and the ability of river self-purification. The objectives of this study were to (i) analyze the ecological, social, and economic characteristics of the river ecosystem, (ii) determine the management status, and (iii) develop a sustainable river ecosystem management design in Tembilahan City. Materials and Methods: The research used a survey method, namely, by making direct observations of the research variables. Social and economic variables of the community were collected through questionnaires. Water quality variables were measured in situ by purposive sampling of the physical, chemical, and biological parameters of the water. Management design was obtained through in-depth interviews with expert respondents and stakeholders involved in river management activities. Socioeconomic data were analyzed using correlation and regression analysis methods, river water quality using the STORET index, and management design using rapid assessment technology for sustainable river environments (RATVEN). Results and Discussion: The results showed that fluctuations in the environmental conditions of river waters are influenced by tides. The STORET index of water quality of the three rivers that drain Tembilahan City is ≥-31, with the polluting parameters TSS, DO, BOD, COD, and phosphate. The diatom diversity index was in the range of 2.3026 ≤ H' ≤ 6.9078, which is in a state of moderate category balance. The multidimensional sustainability status of the river ecosystem is 29,81. The management design (P) of the river ecosystem in Tembilahan City is influenced by the ecological, social, economic, institutional, and technological aspects of river sustainability. Conclusion: The condition of water quality in the three rivers flowing in Tembilahan City is in the bad category (heavily

polluted) based on class II water quality standards; therefore, it is not suitable for use in freshwater fish farming activities, animal husbandry, water for irrigating crops, and other designations that require the same water quality. As a result of river water pollution, the diatom diversity index was in the medium range. The sustainability status of all the aspects/dimensions of the river ecosystem was in the poor category (score
