Daya Dukung Habitat Gajah Sumatera (Elephas Maximus Sumatranus) Di Suaka Margasatwa Balai Raja Kabupaten Bengkalis Provinsi Riau
The endemic fauna of the island of Sumatra is the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), which can be found in almost all lowland areas of the island. Elephants are animals that require the existence of forests as a place to live, breed and shelter. Forests as a natural habitat for elephants in Sumatra are starting to experience damage due to the many exploitation and conversion activities. This study aims to determine the habitat conditions and carrying capacity of the Sumatran elephant habitat in SM Balai Raja. Data collection used the transect path method and plot lines with a size of 20x20m and 1x1m measuring plots to find data on natural forage production. Stratified sampling technique was used to place the plots. Data analysis used the formula of natural forage biomass, vegetation analysis, species diversity index, species evenness index and carrying capacity of Sumatran elephant habitat. The results showed that SM Balai Raja has a temperature of 280C-330C and humidity of 63%-77%. Not all components of the carrying capacity of Sumatran elephant habitat are available in SM Balai Raja. There are puddles outside the area, while the location of mineral salt with a size of 1x2m has not added salt for a long time. Shade conditions in SM Balai Raja that have dense vegetation are only in the Talang Forest with an area of 239 ha. The availability of food in SM Balai Raja is sufficient to accommodate 4 Sumatran elephants.
