Mercury whitening cream is a dangerous type of cream containing heavy metals in low concentrations of toxic nature that women in West Banglas Village use to whiten their faces. The purpose of this study was to find out why women in West Banglas Village, Tebing Tinggi District, Meranti Islands Regency prefer to use mercury whitening cream and how the process of forming rational choices in mercury whitening cream users. The method used is qualitative method. Data collection using observation and in-depth interviews, and supplemented with documentation. The results of this study are the main reason women in West Banglas Village use mercury whitening cream, namely the price of whitening cream which is relatively cheap and can be used for a long time, besides that the results provided are very promising to overcome facial skin problems that they have quickly and education also influences their understanding to choose to use mercury cream. While the selection of mercury whitening cream is rational or not, it is considered rational and acceptable because of course every woman will be tempted by products that are cheap and the results are good, but for knowledge it is necessary to consider the negative effects of long-term use of mercury whitening creams which are very harmful to the skin, face and body.
