Motivasi Mahasiswa Dalam Memilih Mata Kuliah Pilihan Sastra Jepang Pada Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang FKIP Universitas Riau
Motivation is a driving force that compels individuals to take specific actions. Students at Universitas Riau, particularly those enrolled in the Japanese Language Education Program, have diverse motivations when selecting elective courses, one of which is the Japanese Literature course. Student motivation can be influenced by various factors. In this study, the motivation of students is measured using Herzberg's two-factor theory (1966). Herzberg (1966) divides motivation into two types: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The assessment of intrinsic motivation in this study includes interest, positive attitudes, and needs. Meanwhile, the assessment of extrinsic motivation includes security in the learning process, curriculum policies, quality of instruction, peer interaction, and the relationship between students and lecturers.
This study aims to identify the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of students in choosing the Japanese Literature elective course. The respondents of this study were students from the Japanese Language Education Program, specifically those from the 2020, 2021, and 2022 cohorts, who selected the Japanese Literature course in the 2023/2024 academic year. The total number of respondents was 43 students. The sampling technique used in this study was saturated sampling, where all members of the population were included as the research sample to ensure an accurate representation of the entire population.
This study employs a quantitative descriptive approach, with data collection conducted through questionnaires. This type of research was chosen to describe and explain the observed phenomenon using numerical data. Quantitative descriptive research aims to provide a depiction of a variable within the study without testing a specific hypothesis, but rather focusing on the objective understanding and analysis of data. The data in this study were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 50 closed-ended statements. The collected data were analyzed using percentage descriptive analysis techniques. These analytical steps involve calculating respondents' scores and related aspects, summarizing the scores, calculating the average score, and determining percentages using established formulas.

Based on the results of questionnaires distributed to 43 students who chose the Japanese Literature elective course in the odd semester of the 2023/2024 academic year, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in selecting the Japanese Literature elective course was found to be relatively high, reaching 72.90% and 66.18%, respectively. However, intrinsic motivation tends to be slightly higher than extrinsic motivation, with a difference of 6.72%. These results indicate that students tend to have a balanced motivation between internal (intrinsic) and external (extrinsic) factors when selecting courses, particularly the Japanese Literature course. These findings are expected to help improve the quality of instruction and curriculum policies at Universitas Riau.
