Formaldehyde (CH2O) is a finished and intermediate compound that can be used
in various industrial and consumer applications. Formaldehyde has several
anvantages in various industries, for example as a resin (usually used in the
manifacture of particle board, plywood, furniture, and coating), as an
intermediate material for the synthesis of other chemical compounds, and man
more. Formaldehyde is formed by the reaction between methanol and oxygen
which occurs in a fixed bed multitube reactor containing an iron molybdenum
oxide catalyst. This operating process runs at a temperature of 250oC and a
pressure of 1,6 atm. The product is then purified by separating formaldehyde from
O2 and N2 to be taken as a product. This separation process is carried out in an
absorbtion column with the separating medium being water. This plant will be
estabilished in Bontang area, Kelurahan Guntung, East Kalimantan with a
production capacity of 40.000 tons/year. The plant operation runs 24 hours/day
for 330 days in each year, and employee working hours are divided based on shift
and non-shift work systems. The results of the plant economic feasibility analysis
show a PBP value of 1,4 years, an IRR value of 22,7485%, an ROI value of
56,21%, and a BEP value of 28%. This shows that this formaldehyde plant is
feasible to establish.
