Cultural Content Analysis Of An Efl Textbook Entitled “SPLASH (Smart Path To Learning English)” For SMKN 6 Pekanbaru
This paper analyzes cultural content based on the sources and aspects in the SPLASH (Smart Path to Learning English) textbook for grade X vocational high school. A qualitative approach was applied in this descriptive study. The data were gathered qualitatively by reading and categorizing reading passages and visual illustrations in the textbook. The researcher read, coded, analyzed, and classified the collected data as the main instrument to determine the sources and aspects of cultural content. The textbook analyzed is published by commercial publisher Erlangga with 6 chapters and 224 pages. The findings indicate that cultural content represented in SPLASH (Smart Path to Learning English) for grade X is mainly from Expanding Circle country rather than Inner Circle country and Outer Circle country. In addition, the researcher also found the most frequently represented aspect of culture in SPLASH (Smart Path to Learning English) is the product. The researcher recommends that English teachers examine the cultural content of textbooks used as teaching materials to determine if they provide a fair representation of cultural content. Teachers should also provide supplementary materials for learning to ensure that the cultural content acquired in language learning is equal and balanced.
