The CaO-SiO2 catalyst is a type of heterogeneous catalyst widely used in biodiesel production. Modifying the CaO-SiO2 catalyst by adding Fe2O3 can enhance its catalytic activity, surface area, and increase the number of active sites, resulting in a higher biodiesel yield. The aim of this study was to synthesize the CaO-SiO2/Fe2O3 catalyst from blood clam shells, coconut husks, and Fe2O3 powder using the wet impregnation method. The catalyst was synthesized by adding 5% SiO2 by weight of CaO and varying the CaO:Fe2O3 ratio to 6:1, 6:3, and 6:5. The resulting catalysts were analyzed using the Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) method, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. BET analysis showed that the CaO- SiO2/Fe2O3 catalyst (CaO:Fe2O3 6:1) had the largest surface area, with the surface area of the CaO:Fe2O3 ratios in descending order: 6:1 > 6:5 > 6:3. XRD analysis revealed the presence of Portlandite (Ca(OH)2), lime (CaO), α-Fe2O3, and γ-Fe2O3 minerals in all catalyst variations. XRF analysis indicated that the Fe2O3 composition increased with the rising CaO:Fe2O3 ratio (6:1, 6:3, and 6:5), while the amounts of silica (SiO2) and CaO decreased. FTIR analysis showed the presence of O-H, Si-O-Si, Si-O-Ca, C-O, and Fe-O functional groups. The catalysts obtained were then applied to biodiesel production using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) experimental design, specifically the Central Composite Design (CCD), with independent variables including catalyst weight, reaction time, and the molar ratio of oil to methanol. Based on this study, the optimal biodiesel yield was achieved using the CaO-SiO2/Fe2O3 6:3 catalyst under reaction conditions of 60°C, stirring speed of 500 rpm, catalyst weight of 1% (w/w), reaction time of 60 minutes, and an oil:methanol molar ratio of 1:15, resulting in a yield of 96.91%. Compared to previous studies, the biodiesel yield in this research was higher; however, it required higher catalyst production costs. Therefore, further research is needed to synthesize magnetic catalysts at a lower cost.
