ABSTRACT
Propylene is a colorless, flammable, low-viscosity organic compound that is gaseous at room temperature. Propylene is widely used as a raw material in the production of polymers such as polypropylene, which is used in the manufacture of various plastic products. In addition, propylene is also used in the chemical industry as an intermediate in the manufacture of other compounds, such as acrylonitrile, isopropanol, and propylene oxide, which have a variety of applications in manufacturing and industry. In Indonesia, there are not many propylene factories or producers, so imports are made to meet the needs. Therefore, ethylene glycol processing is needed in order to meet the needs of ethylene glycol in Indonesia. The plant is planned to be located in Indramayu sub-district, Balongan district, West Java province. The production capacity of this plant is 16,000 tons/year.
The propylene plant design from propane uses a dehydrogenation process with propane as raw material and Cr2O3/Al2O3 catalyst. Propane is obtained from LPG plant VI of PT Pertamina RU VI Balongan. The propane dehydrogenation process is carried out with Cr2O3/Al2O3 catalyst in a multitube fixed bed reactor to produce propylene. The reaction takes place in the gas phase, operating at 1 atm pressure and 250˚C temperature. The result of the propane dehydrogenation process is propylene with 90% purity and by-products in the form of butane, ethane and hydrogen which will be treated in the waste treatment unit.
The planned company form is a Limited Liability Company (PT) using a line and staff organization system with 330 working days/year. The plant is located in Balongan, Indramayu, West Java. Water needs for the production process, sanitation water, cooling water and boiler feed are obtained from the Cipunegara river. Electricity supply can be obtained from PT PLN Persero and generators. Waste generated from this plant is liquid waste derived from cooling water waste and domestic liquid waste. Labor needs to run this company amounted to 268 people divided into 190 shift employees and 78 non-shift employees. The profitability analysis results show a Net Present Value (NPV) of Rp 2,216,447,894,720, Return on Investment (ROI) of 21.36%, Payback Period (PBP) of 4.68 years, and Break Even Point (BEP) at 56.2% production capacity. From the economic analysis of the plant, it can be concluded that the plant is feasible with a stable market position and a medium level of investment risk.
