EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Rancangan Pabrik Dimethyl Formamide Proses Davy Dengan Desain Alat Utama Kolom Distilasi II DMF (T-103)
Abstract
Dimethyl formamide (DMF) is an organic compound widely used as a solvent in various industries such as acrylic fibers, plastics, pesticides, adhesives, and pharmaceuticals. The demand for DMF in Indonesia is largely met through imports. To reduce import dependence and increase national revenue, it is necessary to establish a DMF plant in Indonesia. The planned DMF plant will be located in Karawang, West Java, with a production capacity of 10,000 tons per year. The main raw material, dimethylamine, will be sourced from Mitsubishi Gas Chemical in Japan, while carbon monoxide will come from PT. Linde Indonesia.
The chosen production process for DMF is the Davy process, which involves reacting dimethylamine and carbon monoxide with sodium methoxide catalyst in a methanol solvent. The reaction occurs in a bubble column reactor at 120°C and 20 atm pressure. The DMF product is then purified through a series of distillation columns. The plant's utilities include water, steam, electricity, and waste treatment units. Solid waste, which consists of salt from catalyst deactivation, is treated using a landfill system, while liquid waste is processed through an activated sludge process before being disposed of into the environment. Process control and safety systems are also implemented to ensure smooth and safe plant operations.
Economic analysis results indicate that the DMF plant with a capacity of 10,000 tons per year is feasible. The total investment required is Rp 186,105,504,594, with 60% financed through bank loans and 40% through equity. The plant is projected to operate efficiently and profitably based on feasibility parameters such as an IRR of 22.739%, a PBP of 2.5 years, a BEP of 29.72%, an SDP of 19.34%, and an ROI of 29.33%, all meeting the standards of feasibility. Sensitivity analysis also shows that the plant's profitability is not sensitive to changes in raw material prices, product prices, and sales volume. With these positive results, the establishment of the DMF plant is expected to provide attractive returns for investors and contribute to meeting domestic DMF needs.
