Executive Summary Rancangan Pabrik Maleic Anhydride Teknologi Lummus Dengan Alat Utama Kolom Absorpsi Maleic Anhydride (T-301)
ABSTRACT
Maleic anhydride is an organic compound that has the molecular formula C4H2O3 with the
IUPAC name 2,5-Furandione. The synthesis of maleic anhydride using Lummus technology is
characterized by the use of n-butane and air as the main raw materials and the help of a
Vanadium Phosphorus Oxide (VPO) catalyst, which is reacted in a fluidized bed reactor. Maleic
anhydride is a basic chemical product that is used as a raw material for chemical production.
Maleic anhydride is used in copolymerization reactions as a comonomer for unsaturated polyester
resins (UPR), oil and fat preservatives, and permanent pressing resins (textiles). UPR production
requires 14% maleic anhydride comonomer. The world market need for maleic anhydride in 2027
is estimated to reach 3.34 million tonnes and will continue to grow along with industry growth.
The maleic anhydride factory will be established in Kesugihan Subdistrict, Cilacap City, Jawa
Tengah Province, in 2027, with a production capacity of 35,000 tons/year.
The maleic anhydride process using Lummus technology has several advantages, namely low
raw material costs and high yields. Utility provision is obtained from the Serayu River water
treatment system using the principles of coagulation and flocculation. The water capacity
required is 7551 liters/hour. Electricity needs are obtained from PT. PLN (Persero) Cilacap area
and provided a generator as a backup. The solid and liquid waste produced from the process is in
the form of catalyst residue and dibutyl phthalate solvent, which is processed by a third party,
namely PT. Krakatoa WWTP. Meanwhile, domestic waste is processed through several stages,
namely equalization, neutralization, aeration, sedimentation, filtration, and final check basin.
The factory was designed by implementing a heat exchanger network system (HEN). The process
control system uses sensor and controller equipment. And equipped with safety equipment. The
main design tool in this design is the absorber.
The maleic anhydride plant has a working time of 347 days per year and 24 hours per day.
3 weeks per year are used for shutdown, maintenance, and repairs. The form of the company is a
limited liability company (PT) using a line and staff structure with a total of 283 employees.
Based on the results of the economic analysis, the maleic anhydride factory is feasible to build
with a Payback Period of 3,25 years, an Internal Rate of Return of 28%, a Break-Even Point of
50,29%, and a net present value of IDR 3,883,321,640,000.
