Karakterisasi fisikokimia dan mikrobiologi pasta gigi berbasis hidroksiapatit dari cangkang kijing air tawar (Pilsbryoconcha exilis)
Freshwater mussel shell waste can act as a calcium precursor in the synthesis of
hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite serves as an active component in toothpaste
formulation, functioning as an abrasive while also possessing the capability to
inhibit the proliferation of bacteria responsible for dental plaque. This study aimed
to evaluate the effect of adding hydroxyapatite into toothpaste on its
physicochemical and microbiological characteristics and to obtain the best
formulation of freshwater mussel shell hydroxyapatite based toothpaste. This study
encompassed the synthesis of hydroxyapatite, toothpaste production, and the
evaluation of the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of toothpaste
from freshwater mussel shell hydroxyapatite. This study used an experimental
method with a completely randomized design consisting of 4 treatments, TH35 (35%
hydroxyapatite from freshwater mussel shells), TH45 (45% hydroxyapatite from
freshwater mussel shells), TH55 (55% hydroxyapatite from freshwater mussel
shells), and TK (commercial toothpaste). The results showed that toothpaste
formulated with hydroxyapatite from freshwater mussel shells at varying
concentrations (35, 45, and 55%) significantly affected the physicochemical
characteristics (colour, aroma, texture, homogeneity, spreadability, pH, and foam
height) and significantly affected the microbiological characteristics (inhibition
zone against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria). The best treatment, determined by
the primary parameters (pH, calcium content, and bacterial inhibition zone), was
the addition of 55% freshwater mussel shell hydroxyapatite with a pH of 7.39,
calcium content of 15.97%, and an inhibition zone of 22.24 mm against
Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
