Peningkatan Degradasi Polutan Organik Air Limbah Rumah Potong Hewan Dengan Proses Biofilter Kombinasi Anaerob-Aerob Bermedia Botol Plastik Berisikan Potongan Plastik Untuk Media Hidup Ikan Budidaya
Waste water originated from butchery contain high concentration of organic matter. Direct disposal of the waste to waters may rise negative impacts to aquatic organism. To reduce the risk, the waste should be processed before disposed. To find out a waste processing technique, a study aims to understand the effectiveness of used plastic bottle filled with plastic pieces as biofilter media in the anaerobic-aerobic reactors for improving the remediation process of BOD5 and COD in the waste water originated from the butchery has been conducted. The processed water was then used for rearing fish and the survival rate of the fish was noted. Parameters measured were BOD5 and COD. Water and fish samplings were conducted 5 times, once/ week. Results shown that the reactor was effective for reducing TSS and TDS content. During the experiment, decrement of BOD5 and COD content in the waste processed using the control reactor was low, there were 34,70–55,42% and 30,18–42,52% respectively. The waste that was treated with a reactor completed with used plastic bottles, however, shown higher effectiveness of BOD5 and COD decrement, there were 72,56–91,65% and 70,86–92,54% respectively. Survival rate of fish that were reared in the control processed water was zero, while those of the treated water was 97% (Pangasius sutchi), 80% (nile tilapia) and 37% (common carp). Data obtained in this reseach indicate that the biofilter media made from used plastic bottles filled with chopped plastic was effective for reducing BOD and COD content in the butchery waste water.
