Degradasi Metilen Biru Menggunakan Katalis Oksida Mangan Tipe Cryptomelane Yang Disintesis Dari Kmno4 Dan Asam Oksalat
ABSTRACT
Methylene blue, an aromatic compound which is chemically stable, is difficult to be degraded using conventional methods. One of effective methods being developed to reduce amount of methylene blue is Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) method. The AOP method utilizes hydroxyl radicals to accelerate oxidation processes. In this study, a microporous manganese oxide catalyst is used to improve the production of hydroxyl radicals. The manganese oxide is one of the catalysts that are widely used for the degradation of methylene blue. The manganese oxides were synthesized by sol-gel method based on the redox reaction between KMnO4 and oxalic acid and were used as the catalyst for decomposed methylene blue in the solution. The catalyst characterizations were performed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Surface Area Analyzer (SAA). The results showed that the manganese oxide synthesized is a cryptomelane-type manganese oxide with the disc-shaped morphology and surface area of 33.260 m2/g. The degradation process of methylene blue is achived by varying the concentration of methylene blue, amount of H2O2, amount of catalyst and reaction temperature. The highest degradation of methylene blue is 95,08% with the following condition : 50 ppm of methylene blue, 100 mg catalyst and 10 mL of H2O2 30% at 60°C with a reaction time as long 120 minutes. Kinetics study showed that the degradation of methylene blue follows the second order reaction and has an activation energy of -2.7187 kJ/mol.
