Komposisi Hasil Tangkapan Sampingan (Bycatch Dan Discard) Perikanan Bubu Dasar Di Sibolga Provinsi Sumatera Utara
Basic fish trap is commonly used by fishermen to catch Demersal fish and Reef fish. This research aims to find out the composition of main catch, bycatch, and discard caught by using fish traps. The results are worthwhile to find alternative for reducing the numbers of bycatch and discard. A survey method was applied with direct observation in order to identify the trapped species. The research was done in the west coast of Sumatera specifically in the catching area of Poncan Island, Sibolga, from December, 2018 until January, 2019.The auxiliary apparatus used in the research were a 5 GT ship, 5 units of wire fish trap with 150 cm length, 100 cm width, and 50 cm height. There were 5 trips of operating time and 5 times of hauling with 5-7 day soaking.
The results of observation reveal that the total numbers of catch using basic fish traps was 329 fish with the weight of 151.4 kg. In details, the number of main catch was 148 fish (44.7%) with the weight of 88.9 kg (58.9%), bycatch was 151 fish (46.1%) with the weight of 57.1 kg (37.4%), and discard was 30 fish (9.2%) with the weight of 5.4 kg (3.7%).
Meanwhile, the percentage of bycatch which could be used was 83.4% and removed bycatch was only 16.6%. However, bycatch which fulfilled the criteria of length at first maturity was 135 fish (74.6%) while 46 fish (25.4%) did not meet the criteria.
During the research, it was found that the fishermen’s income achieved IDR.7,178,500 and the average income was IDR.1,435,700 per trip. The analysis of economic value was done through the formula of TR = TC. The operational cost of the operation was IDR.615,500 (IDR.123,000/trip). There were 2 crews of the ship. The profit-sharing system was 3:1 (75% or IDR.984,525 for the ship owner and 25% or IDR.328,175 for the crews) indicating that the high income significantly contributed to fishermen’s income and the Sibolga Municipality, if it was indicated from the low price of a fish trap (IDR.320,000) for the term of about 3-6 period of its usage.
Overall, the catching fish with fish traps in the west coast of Sumatera provides big opportunity to increase societies’ prosperity and the income of the Sibolga Municipality. However, the operating technique still should be developed in order to continue fish trap business in the future.
