This research aims to study effect application of biochar residue, liquid smoke and interaction of biochar residue and liquid smoke to the growth and yield of upland rice on Ultisol medium. The research was conducted at the Green House of the Faculty of Agriculture, Riau University on January to June 2018. The research in form factorial experiment was arranged a completely randomized design (CRD). The first factor is biochar residue consist of four levels (0/without biochar, 10 ton ha-1 rice husk, 10 ton ha- 1rice straw and composite of rice husk 5 ton ha-1 and of rice straw 5 ton ha-1). The second factors is liquid smoke consisted of 3 levels (0/without liquid smoke, 0.5 ml/L rice husk and 0.5 ml/L rice straw) each combination was repeated three times. The results showed that the application of biochar residue (rice husk, rice straw and composite of rice husk and rice straw) dose 10 ton ha-1 increase plant height, maximum and productive number of tillers, panicle length, amount of grain, dry weight of straw, percentage of rice grain, weight of 1000 seeds, potted grain weight and decrease flowering time, age of harvest compare to without biochar residue even in the mixture of both (1: 1/w/w) the increase is higher. The application of liquid smoke (of rice husk and of rice straw 0.5 ml/L) increase plant height, maximum and productive number of tillers, panicle length, amount of grain, dry weight of straw, percentage of rice grain, weight of 1000 seeds, potted grain weight and decrease flowering time, age of harvest. Interaction of biochar residue (rice husk, rice straw and composite of rice husk and of rice straw) dose 10 ton ha-1 and Liquid smoke (rice husk and of rice straw) increase amount of grain, dry weight of straw, percentage of rice grain, weight of 1000 seeds, and potted grain weight compare to without liquid smoke. Interaction of biochar residue (rice husk, rice straw and composite of rice husk and of rice straw) and Liquid smoke (rice husk and of rice straw) increased amount of grain, dry weight of straw, percentage of rice grain, weight of 1000 seeds, and potted grain weight. The highest increase in rice grain weight was 94.2% obtained from the interaction of mixed residues of biochar and liquid smoke from rice straw compared to controls.
