In carrying out their daily life activities, humans are very dependent on the
natural surroundings so that it gives consequences that humans in managing and
utilizing it must be based on a wise and thoughtful attitude for the prosperity and other
biota and the sustainability of the ecosystem. The destructive actions of nature in
fulfilling human ambitions cause human moral degradation of nature. The results of the
2012 KLH study stated that the Environmental Care Behavior Index (IPPL) in
Indonesia was 0.57 (from absolute number 1). This means that the population of
Indonesia in their daily activities does not behave in a way that cares about the
environment.
The implications of this behavior tend to increase from year to year. Currently
the earth is experiencing a very large environmental change manifested in the problem
of environmental damage, so it needs efforts to overcome it. Through the world of
education has been done by implementing environmental education. Environmental
education is a process aimed at forming behaviors, values and habits to respect the
environment that must be given early on based on direct experience in contact with the
environment, is expected to shape behavior, values and habits so that it becomes a
character of environmental care.
The impact of environmental education so far has not been maximal because in
its implementation it has not been applicative, it does not support the resolution of
environmental problems faced in each area. This indirectly is an indication that in
general the conception of environmental education in schools is more on the order of
theoretical ideas, so that the emergence of the Natural School is expected to have a good
impact on attention to environmental education today. The School of Nature makes
nature a source and place of learning. Nature is a source that will never be exhausted to
be explored, but needs to be developed and made an interesting learning media for

anyone. Nature teaches many things about life, about values, about good and bad that
are communicated with their own language. In the School of Nature, values are
integrated and developed into every existing activity, these values are morals with
exemplary methods, logical thinking, leadership, and interpreneur.
The Bandar Bakau Nature School (SABB) aims at 1). Preserve coastal forests to
keep them stable, protect beaches and river banks, prevent coastal abrasion, protect the
area behind them from waves and strong winds, and prevent salt intrusion in the
direction of land. 2). Making the Dumai River Mangrove Conservation Area as one of
the natural attractions of the City of Dumai. 3). Fostering students to be human beings
who are insightful and have environmental characteristics.
This study aims to develop a natural school-based environmental management
model in increasing environmental awareness of students. This research uses
descriptive-qualitative method by surveying the planning, implementation and
development of environmental management based on the School of Nature in SABB.
The results of this study indicate that obtaining good planning from the Bandar
Bakau Nature School in Dumai City is to restore the mangrove port area by applying the
values of environmental care characters. The implementation of natural schools and
several environmental awareness programs that have an impact on ecology, social and
economy, namely a special Mangrove curriculum, participatory based mangrove
conservation, management of environmentally friendly supporting sarpras, Mangrove
Seed Bank, Clean River and Beach Action, Conservation Areas becoming natural
tourist destinations, and its development in the form of Adoption of Trees, Outlets and
Souvenir Centers and Mangrove Information Centers. The implications of this study are
the design of a strategy model and guidelines for natural school-based environmental
management in increasing students' environmental awareness.
