Esterifikasi Asam Palmitat Dengan Gliserol Menggunakan Katalis Nades (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents) Dari Betain Hidroklorida Dan L-Arganine
ABSTRACT
Monoglycerides, the glycerol monoesters of fatty acids, are molecules consisting of a
hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail with surfactant and emulsifying properties that
help hydrophilic-lipophilic substances mix all together. Therefore, they can be used in
food, detergent, plasticizer, cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations. Monoglycerides
(MG) and diglycerides (DG) are a group of synthetic emulsifiers obtained from the
process of esterification of fatty acids with glycerol using an organic catalyst, enzyme,
and solid catalyst. In this research, an environmentally friendly catalyst was used in the
form of deep eutectic solvents (DES). DES is a system that consists of a mixture of at
least two components, namely hydrogen bond acceptors (HBA) and hydrogen bond
donors (HBD), which from eutectic phases with melting points lower than constituent
components. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical and chemical
properties of NADES (density, viscosity, pH, and FTIR), determine the effect of reaction
temperature and catalyst against the conversion from esterification of palmitic acid with
glycerol. NADES is formed from a mixture of betaine hydrochloride with l-arginine at
80℃ with a stirring speed of 400 rpm at a molar ratio of HBA/HBD of 1/3. The
esterification reaction of palmitic acid with glycerol takes place at a molar ratio of 1/6.
The stirring speed is 400 rpm, the temperature is 120℃-180℃, and the catalyst's weight
is 1-5% weight (based on palmitic acid). The composition of MG and DG was determined
by GC-MS. The reaction conversion increases with increasing catalyst temperature and
weight. The highest reaction conversion (96,43%) was achieved at a reaction
temperature of 180℃ using a 5% weight NADES catalyst. In this condition, MG was
obtained with a composition of 50,62% in the emulsifier product. So, NADES, as a
catalyst, has the opportunity to be applied in the industry.
