ABSTRACT
Corrosion cause a material has a limited lifespan, where the material that
was estimated for long-term use turns out to had a shorter lifespan than its average
lifespan. One of the prevention of corrosion was to used corrosion inhibitors that
made using organic materials. Bay leaf (Syzgium Polyantha L) contains tanin that
used to prevent or slow the occurrence of corrosion. This research purposed for
determine the concentration of bay leaf extract in reducing the rate of corrosion, to
determine the efficiency of the bay leaf extract inhibitor in reducing the rate of
corrosion. This research begins with the manufacture of bay leaf extract using
maceration method for 6 days.The calculation method used in this study was a
method of measured weight loss with inhibitor concentrations of bay leaf extract
(1.5 ; 2 ; 2.5 gr/L) and variations time were (24, 36, 48 and 60 hours). The highest
corrosion rate aluminium before the addition of the inhibitor was 6.906 mmpy at a
concentration of 1 M with a time of 60 hours and the lowest was 3.338 mmpy at a
concentration of 0.5 M with a time of 60 hours. The highest corrosion rate
aluminium after the addition of inhibitors was 4.143 mmpy with corrosion media
concentration H2SO4 1 M of time 24 hour and lowest was 0.460 mmpy with
corrosion media concentration H2SO4 0.5 M of time 60 hour. At best inhibition
efficiency in the addition of inhibitors 2.5 gr/L with corrosion media concentration
H2SO4 0.5 M of time 60 hour was 87.654%. From the resulted explained bay leaf
extract inhibitors made inhibit the rate of corrosion of aluminum metals in solution
H2SO4 0.5 and 1 M
