Esterifikasi Asam Palmitat Dengan Gliserol Menggunakan Katalis Nades (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents) Campuran (Betain Hidroklorida + Gliserol) Dan (Betain Hidroklorida + Glukosa)
ABSTRACT
Mono-diglyceride (MDG) is an emulsifier that can be obtained by esterification of
fatty acids and glycerol. This study was aimed to determine the physical-chemical
properties of NADES and the effect of temperature and the addition of catalyst
amount in the esterification process of fatty acids with glycerol utilizing NADES
catalysts. NADES is a catalyst and a solvent at once which was made from a
mixture of natural non-toxic ingredients. This study used two types of NADES,
(glycerol + betaine hydrochloride = NADES-1) and (glucose + betain
hydrochloride = NADES-2). Esterification was carried out at 1/6 mole ratio of
glycerol/palmitic acid with temperatures of 120oC, 150oC, and 180oC, stirring
speed of 300 rpm, the amount of catalyst 1,3 and 5% by weight, and 3 hours of
reaction time. NADES-1 and NADES-2 had respectively pH of 1.23 and 1.59, with
density of 1.141 g / ml and 1.293 g / ml, and viscosity of 0.218 cP and 0.759 cP.
The hydrogen bonds in NADES-2 was stronger than in NADES-1. The highest
reaction conversion was obtained as 92.59% at 180oC 5% by weight catalyst
utilizing NADES-2. Based on the FTIR test results, the esterification results of
NADES-1 and 2 contained hydroxyl groups, esters and carboxylic acids. The GCMS
test results showed the presence of MDG of 56.58%.
