The Program of International Student Assessment (PISA) of 2018 shows
that the ability of students in Indonesia is below the average rate of many
countries in the world. PISA’s score measurement has been done by measuring
the performance of students in secondary school in three fields, namely
Mathematics, Science, and Literacy. To improve the abilities of students in the
fields of science, students must be good in process skills. The main way to prepare
process skills is through the use of teaching aids in the learning process in
practicum. As matter of fact, not all schools in Indonesia can make sure the
available of practicum tools in their schools due to it needs much and high cost.
Besides, the lack of competence of educators or teachers in designing, preparing,
and running practicum is a certain disturbance to the purpose of practicum itself
in the school. But in this case the objective of this research is to develop
electromagnetic wave lab kit which is being designed to be portable, easy to use,
and economical, equipped with a practicum module.
Before doing some activities for electromagnetic wave lab tool practicum
or research, a method which has been conducted during this research is Research
and Development Method. The activities carried out in this research are divided
into five segments such as to design, to manufactur, to do validity test, to do
practicality test, and to do improvement. So there are two main tests conducted in
this research both validity and practicality. Indeed, the validity test is carried out
to assess whether the electromagnetic wave practicum tools goes with existing
laws of physics. Besides, the practicality test implemented is to assess the
practicality of this electromagnetic wave lab tools when it is used for the high
school level and its compliance with the high school syllabus. In this case, all data
will be obtained by providing questionnaire to research subjects. Besides, in this
research rating scale chosen is a Likert scale of 1 up to 4. Only the
electromagnetic wave practicum tools which is considered over 62.50% of
validity and practicality criteria will be applied in.
In this research, other activities are also executed several analysis
especially for interference such as to do fringe patterns on single slit and on
diffraction grating, to calculate the length of wave of laser light by using
diffraction grating and to determine the thickness of the hair or wire by applying
the diffraction princip. In this research, the fringe pattern is captured well on the
screen. It shows that the distance between the slit and the screen on the single slit
must be more than 150 cm long in order to produce clearly seen fringe patterns.
The fringe pattern which is produced from the diffraction grating is in the form of
points of light. It makes the observations are very comfortable to do. The length of
wave measurement is conducted by measuring the distance between the bright
patterns produced by the interference and the diffraction grating. The results of

wavelength measurement, obtained a value with a good distribution, namely 652
± 14.86 nm. Measuring the thickness of the wire has been done by observing the
diffraction pattern that is formed in the practicum. The results of measuring the
thickness of the wire obtained a thickness value of 0.13 mm. This result is not the
same as the actual wire thickness values. This is because there is a little difficulty
in determining the location of the midpoint in the bright pattern that occurs
because the bright pattern is not a dot but has a certain width. This allows errors
in measuring the distance among bright patterns.
This electromagnetic wave lab tool can be used to do five types of
practicum, namely the effect of the distance between the screen and the diffraction
grating on the dark bright patterns that occurs on the screen, the practicum on the
effect of the distance between gaps in the diffraction grating on the bright and
dark patterns that occur on the screen, the influence practicum the width of a
single slit against the dark bright pattern that occurs on the screen, the lab
measurement determines the wavelength of the laser light using the help of a
diffraction grating and the practicum determines the thickness of the hair or wire
using the diffraction principle of waves. From the validity test results, the total
validity test criteria are 94, 05% with a very valid level of validity and practicality
test results, obtained a total practicality test criteria of 90.53%. It indicates that
this electromagnetic wave lab tool is very suitable for use in Physics practicum
activities at the high school level.
