Quality learning is able to increase the learning motivation of students
and is also able to achieve the goals of National Education in Law no. 20 of 2003
concerning the National Education System article 13 states, developing the
potential of students to become human beings who believe and have devotion to
God Almighty, have noble character, knowledge, competence, creativity,
independence, and become democratic and responsible citizens. Education is a
conscious and planned effort to create an atmosphere and learning process so
that students actively develop their potential to have spiritual strength, selfcontrol,
personality, intelligence, moral dignity, skills needed by themselves,
society, nation and state.
Improve the recruitment, training and preparation, social status and
working conditions of teachers in an effort to create quality teachers. Guerriero
(2014), Hightower, et al (2011), and Goe and Leslie (2008) state that quality
teachers are the spearhead of improving the quality of education in a country. A
country that has quality education is sure to have quality teachers. This is
contained in the Law of the Republic of Indonesia No. 14 of 2005 competencies
that must be possessed by teachers include pedagogical competence, personality
competence, social competence, and professional competence obtained through
professional education. The competence possessed by teachers through
professional education is expected to be able to improve the quality of skills and
attitudes in learning. Based on the thoughts that have been put forward, the
author is interested in researching the Pedagogic and Professional Competencies
of Teachers in Social Studies Subjects in Relation to the Motivation and
Learning Achievement of Students at Pekanbaru City Junior High Schools.
The formulation of the problem in this study is "is there a direct and
indirect relationship between the pedagogical and professional competence of
social studies subject teachers with the motivation and learning achievement of
students in Pekanbaru City Junior High Schools?". This study aims to identify
and analyze the direct and indirect relationship between pedagogical and
professional competences of social studies subject teachers in relation to the
motivation and learning achievement of students in Pekanbaru City Junior High.
The type of research used is descriptive quantitative research, this research was
conducted at Pekanbaru City Junior High. The type of data used is primary data
in the form of questionnaires and secondary data, namely the value of teacher
pedagogical and professional competencies. The population in this study were
107 teachers. The number of samples is obtained using Isaac Michael's table with
N 100 - 110 so that the sample size is 78 - 84 teachers. The data collection
techniques in this study were questionnaires and documentation. The analysis
technique used is Descriptive Analysis, performing the Prerequisite / Classical
Analysis Test to perform Path Analysis.

The results of this study obtained 80 teachers, where the largest gender
was female as many as 70 people with a percentage of 87.5%, the highest age was
40-44 with a percentage of 30%, the most recent education was S1 as many as 70
people with a percentage of 87.5%, and the working period of 30- 39 years old
with the old classification as many as 8 people with a percentage of 10%. Data
was obtained using a questionnaire distributed using the Google Form link,
namely https://forms.gle/of2t2zzhxmEVJoq26, because it was adjusted to the
current situation and conditions (Covid-19 Pandemic). After obtaining the
required data, a prerequisite test analysis is carried out to continue the path
analysis. After conducting the prerequisite test, it is known that the data has met
the requirements needed to perform path analysis.
he results of the path analysis research can be concluded that the
pedagogic and professional competence of teachers has a strong relationship in
increasing motivation and learning achievement. Where the pedagogic and
professional competence of teachers is one of the determinants in increasing the
motivation and learning achievement of students in schools. Teacher pedagogic
and professional competence is closely related to the learning process of students
in the classroom. This is able to increase the learning achievement of students
directly and indirectly. The indirect relationship between students' learning
achievement is improved by increasing the learning motivation of students when
learning takes place.
The conclusion that has been obtained, the researchers suggest to the
principal to improve the pedagogical and professional competence of teachers by
conducting evaluation, supervision, motivating to conduct classroom action
research, and giving awards. Teachers are expected to be enthusiastic in
improving their pedagogical and professional competences in the learning
process by attending MGMP, training, and seminars. Students are expected to
increase motivation and learning achievement by following the teacher's
directions in the learning process. Further researchers are able to carry out
further research on the social competence and personality of teachers, because
motivation and learning achievement are not only related to teacher pedagogical
and professional competence.
