In making bioplastic of starch and PVA, the data supporting does require raw materials' miscibility into the water solvent. To have expected high solubility of water to starch and PVA to produce the desired properties. Miscibility can predict using phase equilibrium methods. In this study, the equilibrium of starch, PVA, and water was determined using the UNIFAC method. Using the UNIFAC method is because it does not require experimental data to determine the equilibrium of the ternary system. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity coefficient of starch-PVA and water components and to determine the thermodynamic ability of starch-PVA-water to mix at various temperatures. This research conduct in two stages; the first stage is a literature study to collect equation data to design a liquid-liquid equilibrium model between starch, PVA, and water to predict the activity coefficient. To predict the activity coefficient in the starch-PVA-water system using a temperature variation of 75o C - 90oC, it takes group interaction parameters for (CH2, CH, CHO, OH), (CH2, CH, OH) and (H2O). After the equation data obtain, then create a program to calculate the activity coefficient and liquid-liquid balance using the UNIFAC method in the second stage. The results of making the equilibrium model produce computational data and graphics. The activity coefficient resulting from the UNIFAC calculation of the ternary system of starch, PVA, and water shows that starch's activity coefficient tends to increase with increasing starch composition.
In contrast, the activity coefficient of PVA is not very stable. The water activity coefficient shows the opposite tendency. Temperature does not seem to affect the starch and PVA design significantly; from the calculation obtained, the starch composition of 0.01045 - 0.15325 and PVA 0.38407 - 0.23860. Likewise, water shows that the heating temperature does not affect the design of the water. To get the right composition for the combination of starch, PVA, and water from the calculation of the mixture's balance was carried out to form a perfectly mixed mixture. The ternary diagram showed the results of calculating the composition in equilibrium. The chart shows a single-phase graph, where if a mixture containing two components dissolves completely, it will form a single-phase region
