Education is certain process of influencing students so that they can adjust
themselves well with their environment. Thereby it will cause change in the
students. Education is expected to develop students’ potency so that they can
become useful people for themselves, the nation, the country, and give conductive
learning process experience.
Teaching and learning process is the process of two components
interaction namely the teacher as the educator and students as the learning
subject. The learning process which occurs between students and teacher need
supporting component such as the interaction which educates the students to
improve their potency in the learning especially in the learning of natural science
(IPA).
Natural science learning at State Junior High School 25 Pekanbaru is
based on the observation and delivery of questions on the science process skill
and critical thinking. The students’ science process skill was low with observation
score 4,17, interpreting the observation with score 2,63, making the hypothesis
score 1,67, doing the observation with score 1,81, and communicating the result
with score 3,06. Students’ critical thinking skill was also low with score of
formulating the problem was 4,72, giving argument 4,31, doing deduction 1,55,
doing induction 4,03, and doing evaluation 5,56 with low criteria.
The science process skill did not obtain particular attention from the
teacher yet. It was seen from the learning process that did not involve the
students’ active role and still on product oriented and not on the process of
finding, until the students’ conceptual mastery was still categorized into low and
the students’ critical thinking skill became less maximal. Most of the students
were not trained yet to connect the knowledge and daily life in the field until they
lack of skill in connecting the concept and relating them to think critically.
Therefore a research was conducted concerning the effect of guided inquiry
model and modiefied freeinquiry with diagram fee on the biology natural science
process skill and critical thinking skill of grade VII students at State Junior High
School 25 Pekanbaru.
The type of this research was quasi experiement using three classes
consisting of the class as experimental class 1, experimental class 2, and the
control class. The research was conducted at the odd semester in November until
December 2019. The research instruments consisted of multiple questions to test
the science process skill (SPS) and critical thinking skill of the students. The
science process skill (SPS) consisted of indicators namely observing, interpreting
the observation, making hypothesis, doing observation, communicating the result,
and critical thinking with indicators consisting of formulating the problem, giving

argument, doing deduction, doing induction, evaluation, taking decision, and
determining the action.
The analysis techniqued used to test the effect of guided inquiry model and
modified freeinquiry with diagram fee on science process skill (SPS) of Biology
natural science and critical thinking of grade VII students at State Junior High
School 25 Pekanbaru is MANOVA analysis.
The research results show that there is effect of guided inquiry model and
modified freeinquiry with diagram vee on science process skill (SPS) of Biology
natural science and critical thinking of grade VII students at State Junior High
School 25 Pekanbaru. In the material of creature classification the average score
of science process skill (SPS) of class experiment 1 is in the amount of 73,17
(good), class experiment 2 67,85 (sufficient), and the control class is 46,13 (less),
and the material of material classification and its changes, the class experiment 1
obtains the average 81,38 (good), class experiment 2 78,04 (good) and the control
class 59,08 (sufficient).
The average result of critical thinking skill on material of living creature
classification shows that experimental class 1 obtains 77,84 (good), experimental
class 2 70,93 (good), and the control class 43,29 (less) and on material of
material classification and its change the average score obtained by experimental
class 1 is 81,98 (excellent), experimental class 2 the average is 78,26 (good), and
the control class the average is 50,80 (less). In the experimental class 1 the
average of science process skill and critical thinking skill is higher than the
experimental class 2 and the control class.
Based on the result of Multivariat Analysis of Varience (MANOVA), it is
stated that guided inquiry model and modified freeinquiry with diagram vee have
significant effect on natural science process skill and critical thinking of the
students with significance value 0,000 < alpha 0.05.
