Pengembangan Buku Referensi Berbasis Isu Sosiosaintifik Tema Lgbt (Lesbian, Gay, Biseksual Dan Transgender) Terhadap Persepsi Dan Pengetahuan Siswa SMA
Education is a means of conscious and planned efforts to explore the potential
of students in the process of changing their mindset against phenomena that occur in
the environment with existing concepts for the creation of an appropriate action in
making thinking decisions. One of the learning processes that is able to lead students
to link the analysis of every problem that exists in the community with the concepts
that have been learned in school is the science learning process.
Science connects various phenomena that occur in society with a scientific
study to obtain accurate truth. In today's society, there are many social issues that
involve science as a science to solve them. This issue is known as the socio-scientific
issue. Sociocultural issues that are hotly discussed today are related to environmental
pollution, infectious diseases, climate change, and sexual behavior deviations. Sexual
behavior deviations are marked by the rise of the LGBT phenomenon which stands
for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. Indonesia is ranked fifth on an
international scale with a population of around 7.5 million of Indonesia's 250 million
people who are LGBT (Santoso, 2016).
Based on the results of short interviews with several students regarding LGBT
issues, it was known that 100% of students were familiar with the term LBGT.
However, more students think LGBT is a disease without being accompanied by
strong arguments. The source of information that they can rely only on the internet.
Another fact that occurred in the field, namely from the results of interviews with 3
Biology teachers from different schools, obtained information that learning
resources, especially reference books that have been integrated with the appointment
of socio-scientific issues, have not been facilitated. In addition, based on the results
of observations from a questionnaire on student perceptions of LGBT issues, it was
found that 33% of respondents were pro, 20% were doubtful, and 47% were contra.
This is due to several factors, namely (1) not having an understanding of the meaning
of LGBT; (2) lack of information about the dangers of LGBT behavior; and (3) there
is no inculcation of knowledge values for preventing LGBT behavior while in school.
Because there is no specific learning material regarding the cultivation of knowledge
and understanding of the dangers of LGBT behavior, it is necessary to do this in the
learning process in the form of a reference book.
This study aims to: (1) Determine the validity of reference books based on
socio-scientific issues as an alternative to Biology teaching materials in high school;
(2) Knowing students' perceptions of the product being developed; (3) Knowing the
increase in students' knowledge after using a reference book based on sociological
issues. This research is a research development (Research and Development)
conducted at SMA PGRI Pekanbaru. The development model used is the ADDIE

Model which consists of the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and
Evaluation stages. The parameters measured in this study were: (1) the validity of the
book; (2) students' perceptions; and (3) student knowledge. The data was collected
through: (1) field observations, (2) interviews, distributing questionnaires, and (3)
cognitive tests. The data analysis was done descriptively.
The results of the research obtained are as follows: (1) The results of the
development of reference books based on the socio-scientific issues of LGBT themes
based on the feasibility aspect of the content get an average (3.1), design / graphic
aspects (2.9), linguistic aspects (3.0), and the psychological aspect (3.3), with an
overall mean of 3.06; (2) Students' perceptions of the use of reference books gave a
response with an average score of 73.4 at the limited trial stage and 77.9 at the
operational trial stage; and (3) The development of reference books has an
increasing effect on students' knowledge with an increase from 52.8 to 86.7. The
increase was high (N-Gain 0.71).
Based on the results of the study, the following conclusions were obtained: (1)
The results of the development of a reference book based on socio-scientific issues
were classified as valid; (2) Students' perceptions of the products developed gave
good responses; and (3) The use of reference books can increase students'
knowledge. Based on the results of this study, a reference book based on sociological
issues with the LGBT theme can be used as an alternative to additional reference
materials in learning biology in high school.
