Isolasi Bakteri Penghasil Selulosa Dari Limbah Perkebunan Kelapa Sawit Dan Buah Buahan Asal Riau (Nanas, Sawo, Dan Pisang): Alternatif Pengganti Kapsul Non-Halal
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is pure cellulose synthesized by various species of bacteria. Bacterial cellulose can be applied in the medical field as a substitute for non-halal gelatine. This study purposed to isolation and production of cellulose-producing bacteria which can be applied as materials for halal capsules. Isolation of cellulose-producing bacteria were carried out on palm oil plantation waste and three different tropical fruit sources (pineapple, sapodilla, dan banana) from Riau using Hestrin-Schramm media in static culture condition with 2 approaches. The determination of dry weight and water content was carried out to know the quality of the cellulose pellicles. In first approach, 10 isolates succeeded in forming a clear zone, but doesn’t produce bacterial cellulose. For the second approach, there were 2 mixed culture that succeeded in forming cellulose pellicles from bananas, namely PSRK2 and PSRK4. The cellulose pellicle produced by each mixed culture has a gel-like, thick and layered texture. Based on the dry weight and water content of the cellulose pellicle from culture PSRK2 and PSRK4 were good quality, because it has water content of 98%. It is expected that the mixed culture bacteria will be able to provide an alternative to gelatine for halal capsule production, production, thus minimizing and replacing non-halal gelatine usage.
