Pemanfaatan Biji Pepaya (Carica Papaya) Sebagai Koagulan Alami Dalam Penyisihan Kekeruhan Air Sungai
ABSTRACT
Utilization of seeds from plants as natural coagulants has been widely used. This
is done as an effort to reduce the use of synthetic coagulants that have a negative
impact on their use. Papaya seeds can be used as a natural coagulant because they
have a protein content of 21.51% and carbohydrates of 3.43%. This study aims to
determine the effect of pH, coagulant dose and slow stirring time on the efficiency
of turbidity removal in river water using natural coagulants from papaya seeds.
Papaya seeds are prepared by drying in the sun for 7 days and sieving with a filter
size of 100 mesh. The operating conditions of the coagulation process were 100
rpm for 1 minute and flocculation was 40 rpm for 20 minutes, which were varied
pH 2, 3, 4, 5.6 and 7, variation of coagulant dose was 0.1 gr / l; 0.2 gr / l; 0.3 gr /
l; 0.4 gr / l; 0.5 gr / l and 0.6 gr / l and variation of slow stirring time is 20 minutes,
30 minutes and 40 minutes. FTIR characterization analysis of papaya seeds showed
vibrations of alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters and
amines. The results obtained showed the highest turbidity removal of 96.62% at
operating conditions of pH 2, coagulant dose of 0.1 g / l and slow stirring time of
20 minutes. The results of this study concluded that the treated water from the
coagulation and flocculation processes using natural coagulants from papaya
seeds for turbidity parameters met the standards.
