Efektivitas Latihan Senam Otak (Brain Gym) Terhadap Peningkatan Fungsi Kognitif Pada Lansia: Literature Review
Aging that occurs when getting older is inevitable and causes
individuals to experience problems holistically, both biologically,
psychologically, and socially. These problems also affect the ability of cognitive
function of the elderly. Providing appropriate interventions, one of them with
brain gym, can prevent further cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s and
dementia. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of brain gym exercise in
improving and optimizing cognitive function of the elderly. Methods: This study
uses a literature review method. Search for research articles using PubMed,
Google Scholar, Science Direct, and ProQuest with keywords brain gym,
cognitive or cognitive function or cognition, and older adults or elderly in 2015-
2020 period. Result: Search results obtained 7 articles that met the inclusion and
exclusion criteria. Matrix analysis of 7 articles was carried out based on the
research objectives, methods, samples, and research instruments, interventions,
statistical analysis, finding, similarities and differences. The results of analysis
show that brain gym can trigger adaptation to changes in brain structure by nerve
growth factors, such as Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and Insulinlike
Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), which can optimize functional nervous system
based on the mechanism of brain plasticity theory. Conclusions: Brain gym can
effectively optimize cognitive function of the elderly. Giving brain gym exercise
can be carried out with light to medium intensity every 1-3 times a week for 10-60
minutes in groups over a period of 4-12 weeks. In addition, brain gym xercise can
also be combined with other activities that can stimulate the brain.
