Potensi Ekstrak Rumput Laut Merah (Eucheuma Spinosum) Pada Pembuatan Hand Sanitizer
ABSTRACT
This study aims to determine the effect of E. spinosum seaweed extract on the
characteristic hand sanitizer. E. spinosum was extracted by maceration method with
methanol as solvent. The research design used a non-factorial Completely
Randomized Design (CRD) with treatment with 4, 6 and 8% extracts. The analysis
parameters consisted of antibacterial activity test against Escherichia coli and
Bacillus subtilis, yield and phytochemical analysis methanol extract of E. spinosum.
Hand sanitizer gel preparation of E. spinosum seaweed extract was analyzed for its
antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis by well diffusion
method, physical properties (pH and viscosity). The results showed that the extracts
with concentrations of 4, 6, and 8% had antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli
with bacterial inhibition zones of 6,17 mm, 7,50 mm and 8,83 mm, respectively.
Extracts with concentrations of 4, 6, and 8% against Bacillus subtilis with inhibition
zones were 9,00 mm, 11,00 mm, and 14,00 mm. The yield of the extract was 3,33%.
The bioactive compounds contained in E. spinosum extract consist of flavonoids,
alkaloids, steroids and saponins. Hand sanitizer gel of E. spinosum extract
concentrations of 4, 6 and 8% had antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli with
inhibition zones of 5,67, 6.33 and 8,67 mm respectively, as well as Bacillus subtilis
was 6,17 mm, 7,33 mm and 8,33 mm. Hand sanitizer generated by 5.83-6.13 pH and
viscosity in 1183, 1455 and 2708 c.Ps. E. spinosum seaweed extract can be used as an
active ingredient hand sanitizer because it can inhibit the growth of microbes,
especially E. coli and B. subtilis.
