Analisis Pengaruh Dosis Pati Kationik Pada Proses Emulsifikasi Terhadap Distribusi Ukuran Partikel Alkenil Suksinat Anhidrat
ABSTRACT
Alkenyl Succinic Anhydride (ASA) has been widely used as internal sizing in
papermaking. Internal sizing is an action to modify paper hidrophobicity. Before
the application of ASA in papermaking, ASA need to be emulsified using
emulsifier in site due to its high reactivity to water and produce deposit that
disturb papermaking process. Parameter that determines the sucession in ASA
emulsifying process is the particle size that produced. The emulsion particle size
needed to be kept under 2 micrometers as much as 90% of its whole emulsion to
ensure ASA functio as internal sizing fulfilled efficiently and not produce deposit.
The particle size of emulsion can be controlled using three parameters in the
emulsifier. The parameter is cationic starch to ASA ratio, emulsification
temperature, and shear force on burks pump. In this final project, the effect of
cationic starch:ASA ratio to emulsion particle size is observed. The particle size
of emulsion is measured by using laser particle size analyzers. Cationic
starch:ASA ratio that used start from 50,7% - 89,7% of ASA. The result of this
final project is the effect of cationic starch:ASA ratio to particle size has been
seen using high shear machinery type emulsifier. To reach particle size less than 2
micrometers 62,4% Cationic Starch:ASA ratio is needed and produce 5,21%
higher than 4 micrometers particles. The optimal cationic starch:ASA ratio in
application to paper internal sizing is 70,2% that produce 95,62% less than 2
micrometers and produce only 0,13% higher than 4 micrometers particles.
