The development of science and technology has an impact on various
aspects of life, especially in the field of education. Teachers as the spearhead of
education providers are required to have the ability as a facilitator who guides
students to develop their potential through learning activities. Implementation of
the 2013 curriculum needs to be accompanied by learning models, learning
resources, and a conducive learning environment. One of the suggested learning
models in the 2013 curriculum isguided inquiry.
Wahab (2013) explains that guided inquiry-based learning is one of the
learning models that plays an important role in building a learning paradigm that
emphasizes the active learning of students. Learning is not only limited to
activities carried out in the classroom, the environment can be used as a fun
learning place and learning resource. By using the environment as a learning
resource, students will get a real learning experience, so that students are
motivated to increase knowledge and can train students' critical thinking skills.
Students who have high learning motivation are likely to have high critical
thinking skills. This means that the higher the drive to learn, the greater the effort
made to participate in learning activities. School conditions are close to the
natural environment and biology is closely related to nature. Teachers can use the
school environment as a learning resource, for example on materials on
biodiversity, fungi, the world of plants (plantae), the world of animals (animalia),
ecology, environmental change and preservation. Seeing the condition of the
school environment which has school gardens and school gardens with various
kinds of plants is very supportive to be used as a learning resource.
Based on the description above, the researcher is interested in conducting a study
entitled the use of the school environment in learning biology throughguided
inquiry on critical thinking skills and learning motivation of Class X SMAN
students.
This research is a quasi-experiment or quasi- experiment. According to
Sugiyono (2015) quasi-experimental is a research that approaches real
experimental research, this research aims to directly test the effect of one variable
on other variables and test the hypothesis of a causal relationship. The design of
this quasi-experimental research was a control group pretest-posttest design,
using two classes, one control class and one experimental class. Both classes
were given a pretest and posttest to determine the difference between the
experimental class and the control class.
The population in this study were students of class X MIPA SMAN 1 XIII
Koto Kampar which consisted of 2 classes. The sample in this study were all
students of class X MIPA SMAN 1 XIII Koto Kampar. The sampling technique in
this research is saturated sampling. Sugiyono (2007) says saturated sampling is a
sampling technique when all members of the population are used as samples. The
determination of the control class and the experimental class is done by looking at

the odd semester test scores. From the results of the draw, it was found that class
X Mipa 1 was the experimental class with 27 students, consisting of 13 boys and
14 girls. Class X Mipa 2 as a control class with 25 students consisting of 11 boys
and 14 girls. The independent variable (X) is guided inquiry learning
model(guidedinquiry)to the environment as a learning resource, carried out the
experimental class. The dependent variable (Y) is critical thinking ability (Y1) and
students' learning motivation (Y2).
This type of research data is primary data. Sources of data in this study were the
scores ofresults pretest and posttest the students', students' learning motivation
questionnaires, and students' LKPD scores. Parameter is a measuring tool to see
the success of the goal. The parameters in this study are: 1. Students' Critical
Thinking Ability in terms of: formulating problems, providing arguments,
deductions, induction, evaluating, making decisions and determining actions. 2.
Student Learning Motivation, measuring the level of student learning motivation
in terms of: diligent, tenacious, interested, independent, happy to challenge.
Collecting data using a learning motivation questionnaire and a written
test in the form of reasoned objective questions. Instrument validity is done by
using content validity and construct validity. Before being used, the research
instrument was tested on class XI MIPA. Research hypothesis test using t test,
with the provision that ift> ttable = Ha accepted and Ho rejected, could also use the
provisions of sig> α = Ha accepted and Ho rejected.
The results of the study concluded that the use of the school environment
as a learning resource through guided inquiry had an effect on the critical
thinking skills of students in class X MIPA SMAN 1 XIII Koto Kampar, with tcount
(18.497) > ttable (2.0518) and sig value > = Ha is accepted. The use of the school
environment as a source of learning through guided inquiry has an effect on the
learning motivation of students in class X MIPA SMAN 1 XIII Koto Kampar, with
a value of tarithmetic (26.397) > ttable (2.0518) and the value of sig > = Ha is
accepted. The effect of using the school environment as a learning resource
through guided inquiry on critical thinking skills is 0.58 medium category, and
students' learning motivation is 0.64 medium category.
