Efek Waktu Iradiasi Microwave Abu Dasar Boiler Cangkang Kelapa Sawit Terhadap Adsorpsi Zat Warna Metilen Biru
SUMMARY
Boiler bottom ash produced from the burning process of palm oil shells at a temperature of 900℃ in the boiler unit of palm oil mill are abundant solid waste. This solid waste has a high enough silica content and a small particle size, but on the other hand this material has not been utilized. This study aims to treat and utilize boiler bottom ash waste by making it an adsorbent. Boiler bottom ash adsorbent was prepared by using microwave activation method at 100 watts with variation of activation time (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 minutes). The effect of microwave activation is seen based on the efficiency and adsorption power of 50 ppm methylene blue. The function groups of boiler bottom ash adsorbent after microwave activation were analyzed by FTIR, while surface morphology and elemental composition were analyzed by SEM-EDS. The results of research show that the activation time affects the adsorption ability, which increases to 3 minutes of activation time and decreases at 4 and 5 minutes. Based on the adsorption ability of methylene blue, the optimum activation time by microwave was 3 minutes with an adsorption efficiency of 93.52% and an adsorption power of 11.5457 mg.g-1. The activation process results in an increase in the percentage of elements O, Si, P, K and Al, resulting in a decrease in the percentage of elements Fe, Ca, Mg and Cu. The activation process with microwave also causes pore growth. The functional groups contained in the boiler bottom ash from palm oil shell are Si-O, Ca-O, Mg-O, Al-O, Si-O-Si and Si-O-Al, the functional groups did not change after the activation process by microwave.
