Pengaruh Waktu Milling Terhadap Sifat Kristalinitas Dan Distribusi Ukuran Partikel Magnetik Fe3o4 Pasir Pantai Sungai Suci Bengkulu
ABSTRACT
The aim of this researchis to determine the effect of milling time on the
crystallinity, size and size distribution of magnetic particles of natural sand
collected from Sungai Suci Beach at Pondok Kelapa County, Bengkulu Tengah
District, Bengkulu Province. Crystallin size and particle size well as particle
size distribution of magnetic particles were determined using X-Ray Diffraction
(XRD) method and Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), repectively. Magnetic and non
magnetic particles of the sample were separated by Iron Sand Separator (ISS)
and Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnet prior to ball milling process. The
Product of NdFeB was milled using Ball Milling stage I for 60 hours using a
combination of milling balls with diameter of 0.5, 0.7, and 1,5 cm, this product
is called product of BM I. Product of BM I was divided into 3 parts and each
milled using ball milling stage 2 as a function milling time of 20, 40, and 60
hours. This product are called BM II A, BM II B and BM II C product.
Magnetic Susceptibility of the products was determined based on magnetic
induction of a selonoid (B0) and total magnetic induction of the solenoid (BT)
and measured using Pasco magnetic Probe PS-2162. The result showed that
magnetic susceptibility of BM II products increases from 7572.66 x 10-5,
8957.01x 10-5, 10652x10-5 and 12108.23 x 10-5 with increasing milling time of 0,
20, 40 and 60 hours. XRD results show that the average crystalline size of
magnetic particles of BM II A, BM II B, dan BM II C products decreases from
40.087, 34.267 and 24,574 nm with increasing milling time of 20, 40, and 60
hours, respectively. Moreover, results of XRD indicate that the magnetic
particles consist of a combination of two magnetic phases namely magnetite
(Fe3O4) and hematite (α-Fe2O3). The PSA results show that the size of magnetic
particles decrease from 659, 655, and 548 nm with increasing milling time of
20 to 60 hours.
