Preparasi Dan Karakterisasi Arang Aktif Dari Kulit Buah Mahoni (Swietenia Macrophylla K.) Menggunakan Aktivator Koh Dan Aplikasinya Sebagai Adsorben Pada Larutan Metilen Biru
Mahogany (Swietenia macrophyla K.) is a type of multipurpose plant that can be
used as a road shade tree. One part of the mahogany plant that has the potential to
become waste somewhere is the skin of the fruit. Mahogany rind waste can be
used as activated charcoal material based on its high cellulose content as a carbon
source. The method used is carbonization at a temperature of 400oC for 30
minutes and the activation process is carried out chemically using KOH activator
with concentration variations of 0, 2, 5 and 8% then physical activation
(calcination) with temperature variations of 450, 500, 550oC for 60 minutes. The
optimum condition of activated charcoal from mahogany rind was at a
concentration of 2% KOH activator with a calcination temperature of 500oC for
60 minutes, obtaining the best characterization results, namely water content of
0.49%; ash 5.14%; and iodine adsorption capacity of 760,639 mg g-1. The
maximum adsorption efficiency of mahogany rind activated charcoal to methylene
blue solution was 99.54% with Qm = 6.95 mg g-1. The equilibrium model
obtained is following the Langmuir adsorption isotherm with R2 = 0.9937.
