Elektrokoagulasi Limbah Cair Kelapa Sawit Variasi Kuat Arus, Lama Waktu Dan Jarak Elektroda
Riau ranks first in Indonesia in the production of crude palm oil (CPO) in 2020,
reaching 21%. In 2018, the amount of CPO produced in Indonesia reached 42.9
million tons. Palm oil liquid waste has a BOD5 value of 25,000 mg/L, a COD
value of 50,000 mg/L, a TSS 18,000 mg/L, NH3-N 80 mg/L and an oil content of
6,000 mg/L. The high level of pollutants in palm oil effluent causes the need for
waste treatment that can reduce the impact of palm oil effluent.
Electrocoagulation is one of the methods in treating liquid waste. The basic
principle of electrocoagulation is based on reduction and oxidation reactions. This
study uses variations in current, electrode distance and length of time for
electrocoagulation in processing palm oil effluent. The flocculants produced from
the electrocoagulation process were analyzed using Scanning Electron
Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) to see the
morphology of the precipitate and analyze the flocculant elements. The
electrocoagulation filtrate was analyzed using the Chemical Oxygen Demand
(COD) parameter by the bichromate titrimetric method. Based on the results of
the study, the 2 ampere test sample had a COD value of 332.02 mg/L with a COD
reduction of 70.46%. The 0.5 cm electrode distance test sample had a COD value
of 281.95 mg/L with a COD reduction of 74.92%. The electrocoagulation time
test sample of 240 minutes had a COD value of 116.79 mg/L with a COD
reduction of 89.61%.The 2 ampere current test sample has a small lump
morphology that is concentrated in one location. The 0.5 cm electrode distance
test sample has a large lump morphology. The test sample with a time of 240
minutes of electrocoagulation had the form of small clots and was not
concentrated in one location. The results of elemental analysis using Energy
Dispersive X-Ray (EDS) showed that the three flocculants had an iron (Fe)
content of 65±4.04%. The content of oxygen (O) is 24.4±3.1%. The elemental
content of carbon (C) is 7.11±2.84%. The elemental content of aluminum (Al) is
0.54±0.084%. The use of electrocoagulation is quite effective in reducing
pollution due to palm oil liquid waste.
