SUMMARY
AULIA RIZKI RAMADHANTI, NIM.2110246982. SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MANGANESE OXIDE-MAGNETITE (Fe3O4) COMPOSITE FOR METHYLENE BLUE DEGRADATION, dibimbing oleh Prof. Dr. Amir Awaluddin, M.Sc., Dr. Nurhayati, M.Sc.
Methylene blue (MB) is a cationic dye commonly used in the textile and printing industries. This compound is toxic, difficult to decompose, and can cause health problems such as nausea, vomiting, anemia, and hypertension. MB is also classified as non-biodegradable with a stable complex aromatic structure, making it difficult to degrade by conventional methods. Heterogeneous catalysts offer effective and environmentally friendly solutions for degrading synthetic dyes such as methylene blue. In this study, MnOx–Fe₃O₄ composites were synthesized using the hydrothermal method, with varying Fe₃O₄ weights (1:1, 1:5, 1:10) to obtain the most optimal composite ratio. Material characterization was performed using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and BET to identify crystal structure, functional groups, surface morphology, and specific surface area. The catalytic performance of the composite was tested through Fenton, photo-Fenton, and photocatalytic processes. The tests were conducted by varying the pH, H₂O₂ concentration, and catalyst weight. The results showed that the composite with a Fe₃O₄ ratio of 1:10 exhibited the highest degradation efficiency of 92.27 % under basic conditions (pH 9), with the Fenton method yielding the most optimal results. The composite's regeneration capability was also tested through three cycles of repeated degradation. Although there was a slight decrease in efficiency, the composite still showed good performance and potential for use in sustainable dye treatment applications. Overall, the MnOx–Fe₃O₄ 1:10 composite demonstrated high effectiveness and good prospects as an environmentally friendly catalyst.
Keywords: manganese oxide, Fe3O4, Fenton
